Lincoln Park Neighborhood in Chicago, IL

Strolling down the tree-lined streets of the Lincoln Park neighborhood is a bit like strolling back in time. Vintage Victorian houses, some dating back to the turn of the 19th century, are framed by expanses of lawn and meticulously tended gardens. In many ways the neighborhood is a continuation of Lincoln Park which sits on the western edge along North 5th Street.

The park itself is a city treasure, six blocks long and five wide, offering picnic areas, playgrounds, jogging trails, horseshoe pits, and tennis courts. Bordering the park on the southern end is the Franklin Nelson Recreation Center, home of the Junior Blues Hockey team. Other offerings of the park are a seasonal public pool and FunShop, a parent-child activity center for children under six. A day care camp is offered for school-age children during the summer holidays and the Christmas break. Bordering Lincoln Park on the west is Lincoln’s Tomb, a State Historic Site.

In addition to the stately Victorian structures, later developments in the 1980s and 1990s added some small apartment buildings to the neighborhood, making sure they blended in with the grand old homes. The Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association organizes the annual, “Plant the Town Red” campaign, urging residents to fill their yards with roses, tulips, lantanas, and other flowers each spring. The area is pedestrian friendly, and in spring, sweetly scented.

Ridgely Elementary School is on the northern end of Lincoln Park on North 8th Street. The closest secondary school is Lanphier High just east of the neighborhood on North 11th Street. The Catholic St Joseph’s School is on the southern end on North 5th Street. Shops and restaurants are found along North Grand Avenue East and North 9th Street. The Sangamon Shopping Center is to the northeast on Sangamon Avenue.
